This game doesn’t just run on the Oric – it shines. It strikes a beautiful balance between complexity and accessibility that feels effortless, yet clearly comes from deep, skillful work. The interface, the sound, the progression… everything clicks. You’re not just playing – you’re discovering.

Finished. The game is fantastic and fully replayable. Surely the game of the year on the Oric platform and one of the best in the whole library. Indispensable.

This is such a great achievement on that lovely but very quirky Oric Atmos, very well done! Must have for Oric Atmos lovers.

Clearly a game made with love, fantastic vibes, good music, great theming and I can't wait to play through to the end.

This game has been lovingly crafted by one of Orics' best developers, and it shows in the attention to details, aesthetics, and playability that has been refined over months and months of careful coding and testing.

Unlike some modern games which literally spoon feed you everything this game actually requires a little thought, but nothing is too obscure that I got frustated and would have wanted a walk through. (...) I genuinely think this is a brilliant game and incredibly enjoyable, even for people (like myself) who aren't inherently a fan of text based games.

Cool retro textbased adventure game with some nice QoL features like shortcuts for commands and items. That makes the 2 hr timer to beat the case feel fair and motivating. Gotta love the intro theme as well.

Absolutely superb remake of the original game from 1983. I still have my original tape of this game and never thought to see such a thing on Steam!

    Retro Gamer magazine 269

In this interview (in English), Mickael Pointier discusses Encounter HD, a graphical remake of the 1983 text adventure Encounter for the Oric Atmos, released on Steam. Pointier’s journey with the Oric began in 1983, inspired by a Boy Scouts leader and his early BASIC programming experiences, leading him to choose the Atmos for its value. He shares his development process, using tools like Paint Shop Pro 9, Visual Code, and the Oric SDK, which he updated for this project.

The remake, inspired by his struggles with the original English-only game as a French speaker in the '80s, adds graphics, animations, sound effects, and music, transforming it into a modernized adventure akin to point-and-click classics like Maniac Mansion. Facing memory and disk space challenges, the game now includes 125 images, 20 sound effects, and six music tracks, making it one of the largest Oric games at 751 KB of compressed data.

A limited physical release is planned for the Oric community, with 20 copies gifted to contributors and contest winners, while digital versions are available. After Encounter HD, Pointier plans a 2025 sabbatical after nearly 30 years in the gaming industry, with future projects like a Dungeon Master prototype and a futuristic racing game for the Oric.

I expected not to like it: I had never heard of the original game (a bad omen) and well, this would just be an early text adventure game, just with added graphics. But I was wrong, the game is good and it is fun! Not goofy fun like Monkey Island but fun because of the game design - and that I'm not sure was the same in the original game.(...) So yeah, if you had an Oric, go for it, if you like text adventure games, go for it, if you have a thing for point & click adventure - which the game is not - I'd suggest you go for it anyway because you may enjoy this different brand of adventure more than you think.

In short, for this price, it's definitely a steal and I would recommend it to all adventure games fan, and even to those like me that used to go through them with walkthroughs when they were young! :-) Go blind and enjoy your runs (and mistakes) and, remember, windows are not your friends!
